Released almost exactly 30 years ago on June 20, 1980, The “Blues Brothers” has been designated a Catholic Classic Film. It is possibly my #1 all-time favorite movie, no, it IS my all-time favorite – the one I would take with me on a desert island and could watch over and over and over. It truly is the best action movie/musical/road trip/buddy movie one could ever see! Music by John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, Cab Calloway and of course, the Blues Brothers themselves and on and on.
It is one of those rare movies that you can use as an indicator or barometer of someone’s personality and background – if they haven’t seen it, there is a pretty good chance that their philosophical, cultural and social background will not mesh with yours but then again, I have really enjoyed introducing this movie to Blues Brother Virgins over the years and watching the conversion take place before my very eyes. If you like the movie, you know what I mean.
I still remember Mom taking me to see the movie at the Truman Center Theater in Grandview, MO, must have been the summer of 1980. My recollection is that she had seen it previously and thought it was important enough to take an impressionable 15 year old to see! Possibly the first R rated movie I saw – thanks Mom!
